STEAM* Studio
at the SHAC
*Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math

Third Friday of the Month: STEAM Studio at the SHAC for ages 6-12

Join us on the first Friday of every month, from 6-7:30, for an evening of hands-on science and creativity at the SHAC - The Suzanne Haskew Arts Center, located at 125 S. Main Street, in downtown Milford.  For children age 7-12.  Most 6-year-olds will need a parent staying to help with following detailed instructions, numbers and math, or fine motor skill steps.  Younger children may register but require a parent to assist throughout.

October 18 STEAM Studio:  LEVERS, CATAPULTS, and TREBUCHETS

Participants will explore the science of forces and leverage by building their own levers, using them a simple trebuchet, and building catapults.  The kids will then use provided supplies and their imagination to create their own launch game:  knocking over towers, toppling targets, or an array of numbered cups for scoring points.  A great combination of science and art!

Slime time:  September STEAM Studio was SUPER!

Each class is a stand-alone adventure focusing on a single theme, such as rockets, plants, sound waves, under-the-sea,  simple machines, and so much more.  Activities will include some science games and exploration, as well as building devices and/or constructing crafts that the kids will take home with them.  Registration is required in advance (a few drop in students can be accommodated, but pre-registration helps us determine the number of supplies we bring) which you can do on the SHAC website by clicking here.

What will this month's adventure be?
do you have a request for our next science topic?  Send your ideas to Dr Terry at [email protected]
We need volunteers!

The SHAC is a non-profit organization, and part of the cost of every class goes toward funding to help the center serve the community.  Give us a hand by helping our classes run smoothly for the youngest participants.  You can earn 2 service credit hours per month, on the first Friday, from 5:45-7:45 PM.   Whether you're an Honor Society student, part of a local scouting organization, or even part of a college service fraternity, we welcome your help.

Get in touch with us for more information or to get signed up at [email protected]

Sept 20th STEAM Studio:  SLIME TIME!

Is it a liquid?  Is it a solid?  It's neither -- it's SLIME! GAK!  OOBLECK!  Whatever you call it, it's science fun! Come explore an introduction to solids and liquids by playing with slime.  We'll make slime from cornstarch and water, as well as other recipes, in order to compare their textures and properties.  Students will mix in colors and glitter to see how they blend, and then take home a bagful of their colorful creations. (If the weather is good, we might do this outside.  Either way, students should come dressed to get messy!)

cancelled - APRIL 5th STEAM STUDIO TOPIC:
Ramps-o-Rama!

Get ready to ramp things up!!!  We will be building for speed, with an exploration of forces and motion.  Participants will experiment with gravity, friction, wheels, and ramps to get things moving.  They will begin by selecting a number of different surfaces to attach to their box and slide down their ramp to find the fastest and slowest textures.   Then we'll change shapes to work with cylinders- overcoming friction and really picking up speed.  And finally, with magic wands (powered by static friction) we'll even try to get empty pop cans to travel UP the ramps and defy gravity!
MARCH 1st STEAM STUDIO TOPIC:
Sounds Abound!
Using whizzy balloons and slinkies, kids will explore how a sound wave moves and vibrates.  Once we understand that sound travels through matter, we can manipulate matter to make new sounds.  Kids will use bottles, tubes, cups, and rubber bands to alter the pitch of sounds (high versus low notes).  And with a trampoline, some solo cups, and string, students will literally pump up the volume as we change the amplitude (volume) of the sound waves to get loud!  Students will keep the amplifier they make, as well as some of the other sound makers.  If there is time we will do a few activities on hearing - directional location of sound through a game of "whistle-hide-and-seek", and  building a model of an ear drum.
FEBRUARY 2nd STEAM STUDIO TOPIC:
Plant Power
Kids will explore the life of a tree through a live-action minecraft-style game of collecting supplies and building pieces.  Grab some sun, collect some air, and suck up water – now you’re ready to “make” sugar.  Use the sugar to “buy” trunk, leaves, flowers, and fruit to build a tree. Students will then model the movement of water through roots and stems by making a colorful bookmark using capillary action, and model the role of leaves by making a bracelet using UV-reacting beads.  Then participants will then get to build some fruits (as many as time permits), because a fruit is just a suitcase for seeds.  They will make an edible jellybean fruit, a wind-borne helicopter fruit, and a Velcro-covered animal transported fruit, and end with a bang with an explosive balloon fruit modelled after common jewelweed.
DECEMBER 1ST STEAM STUDIO TOPIC:
"Blast-Off!!"
Gasses in the air may be invisible, but that doesn’t stop them from doing so many fascinating things.  Join us to explore how gasses carry smells, extinguish candle flames, create pressure, and even launch film-can rockets!  We will also investigate the engineering limits of decorating a rocket that must be light enough to launch, versus the embellishments we can use to decorate rocket models.
Safety glasses will be provided and MUST be worn
NOVEMBER 3RD STEAM STUDIO TOPIC:
"Underwater Adventures"
Want to raise a sunken treasure of gems using Science?  How about helping a baby squiddy to catch a fish (and decorate their aquarium)?  Would you enjoy designing a beautiful jellyfish?  If these  activities sound exciting, then  the November STEAM Studio is the place for you!
Join us to learn pipetting techniques and measurement of liquids,  learn how salt affects the density of water, create a Cartesian diver to investigate gas compressibility, and use your artistic skills to decorate an aquarium habitat and fashion a jellyfish.
